Shadan is a Mac app with a Safari extension that hides images you choose, and images that look like them, on the websites you allow. Shadan recognizes images entirely on your Mac. The app does not use an account or sign-in, shows no ads, contains no analytics or tracking, and never sends your images, browsing or choices to us. We do not sell or share your data.
Data the app handles
- On sites you allow in Safari, the web addresses of images and video posters on the page that are at least roughly 120 × 90 pixels. Smaller images, such as icons and avatars, are skipped.
- The images at those addresses, which the app downloads to analyze but does not keep.
- The topics you create and your answers when you confirm or reject images for them.
- An anonymous diagnostics log, described below.
On-device processing and storage
To check an image, Shadan’s extension downloads it again directly from the site that serves it. This is a normal request from your Mac to that image’s server, made without your browser’s cookies. Nothing is sent to Shadan’s developer.
Images are analyzed on your Mac with Apple’s Core ML. The following is stored locally, in the Safari extension’s sandboxed container (~/Library/Containers/jp.shadan.Shadan.Extension):
- For each image checked: two numeric fingerprints, the image’s web address and when it was seen. Shadan keeps these for up to 20,000 images and deletes them after 30 days. Fingerprints can’t be turned back into images.
- For each topic you create: its name, the fingerprints and web addresses of the example images you confirmed or rejected, and a small classifier trained on your answers.
Shadan does not store the pages you visit or the images themselves.
The Shadan app in your Applications folder contains only the app, its Safari extension and the recognition models. It never holds your data.
Diagnostics and bug reports
Shadan keeps an anonymous diagnostics log on your Mac, in a folder shared by the app and its extension (~/Library/Group Containers/XDWKSAH7W3.jp.shadan): the app and macOS versions, counts, timings and types of errors. It contains no image addresses, images or topic names.
The log is only sent if you choose About Shadan → Report a Bug…, which opens an email draft in your mail app with the log attached. You can review the draft and decide whether to send it.
Updates
To check for updates, Shadan uses Sparkle to read https://shadan.jp/shadan-appcast.xml. No system profile is sent. Updates are downloaded from GitHub.
No data collection, sharing, or tracking by the app
Shadan does not transmit app data to us, collect it on a server, sell it, share it with third parties, or track you across apps and websites. The sites that serve images see the requests your Mac makes to download them, as they would when Safari loads those images, and handle them under their own terms.
Permissions
- Safari website access: granted by you in Safari, one site at a time. Shadan only checks images on the sites you allow.
- No other permissions. Shadan doesn’t ask for access to your files, camera, microphone, contacts or location. As a sandboxed Mac app it declares outgoing network access, which macOS grants without a prompt; Shadan uses it only to download images for analysis and to check for updates.
You can change website access in Safari → Settings → Websites → Shadan, and turn the extension off in Safari → Settings → Extensions.
Retention and deletion
Fingerprints expire after 30 days. Deleting a topic in the Shadan popup removes its examples. Turning off or removing the Safari extension stops all checking. To delete everything Shadan has stored, remove the app and these folders: ~/Library/Containers/jp.shadan.Shadan, ~/Library/Containers/jp.shadan.Shadan.Extension and ~/Library/Group Containers/XDWKSAH7W3.jp.shadan.
This website
Once Shadan is available to download, shadan.jp will count clicks on its download button. The page sends only the product and button name (for example “shadan” and “download-macos”), and the server keeps a running total per button with the times of the first and latest click. No cookies are used, and your IP address is used briefly by Cloudflare to prevent abuse but is not stored. The code is open source: page script · server code · database table.
Children and general use
Shadan is a general-purpose utility and is not directed to children. Because the app does not collect or transmit personal data to us, we do not knowingly collect children’s personal data through the app.
Changes to this policy
September 27th, 2026: First version.
We may update this policy as Shadan changes. We will revise the date above and describe material changes clearly on this page or through an appropriate app or release notice.
